Video Monitoring Case Studies:
Listed below are four instances where video monitoring
provided the valuable protection available with enhanced alarm
systems. It is
clear from these case studies that schools that develop a
curriculum to equip their alarm system to include video
monitoring can provide at a minimum a piece of mind for
customers and at the most offer a drastic reduction of violence.
The notion behind video monitoring is that violence is less
likely to occur if it can be seen. Some schools have even
resorted to using video monitoring equipment on school buses and
in school parking lots. Additionally, evidence obtained from
such equipment has been utilized in prosecuting law-breaking
students. In other words, video monitoring plays a tremendous
role in combating crime.
• Alabama. By enhancing their
security system, the Huntsville School System experienced a
decline in the number of burglaries, ranging from 10-30 a month
to five a year. Their new security system also captured a 99
percent apprehension rate. Losses to the school system through
vandalism, fire and theft also dropped, as well as their
insurance premiums.
• Minnesota. The school system here had a similar
incident to that of Aurora’s Waubonsie High School where an
intruder raped a student during the mid-1990s. Since installing
a new improved security system, the Minnesota school has seen a
drop in vandalism at their institution. School officials credit
the drop to having a security system that has an ability to
respond quickly.
• California. After a Glendale school installed a video
surveillance system at the building’s entrance and exits, there
was a sharp reduction in vandalism especially in locker rooms.
Other problems previously plaguing the school like stolen
computer equipment and arson soon diminished. In fact, without a
video surveillance system the school lost $3 million in damages
and had to close 30 classrooms.
• Wimborne, Dorset, England. Named in honor of Queen
Elizabeth, Dorset school took steps this year to install
advanced cameras to improve security and to automatically track
any intruders in and around the institution. These cameras can
follow intruders as they move around the site including the
school grounds and sports fields. The school further installed
static indoor cameras to cover the cafeteria and library. For
the school, this means that there is no need to set up guard
tours on the cameras – cameras that can simply watch for any
defined movement caused by an intruder and follow it, triggering
recording and capturing the entire event on the digital recorder
and thus raising an alarm. These cameras are valuable for
schools and other facilities with either sports fields or large
grounds as they automatically provide alarms if an intruder is
detected and then spontaneously follows them using a built-in
pan, tilt and zoom to ensure that they are tracked and recorded,
according to Queen Elizabeth’s business manager. They give us
complete peace of mind, he added.
